Next Project:

I am not certain when this picture was taken. I think it is before I bought the Berry.
The screened in porch may be ten years ago or longer.

As for the age of this picture: That tree by my neighbor’s shed took over the sidewalk and is now a stump.

I have been wanting to restore the mural for years, but many other projects take priority. These past few years have seen a definite decrease in the visibility of the mural. She is fading fast. It is now, or never.

Aug 24, 2020. The scaffolding is up and I am outlining what I can still see.

Today is foggy, The safety line is installed, but I need to wait for the sun to burn off the fog. This next picture is later in the day.

Here I am, getting started
a close up

If you look close. you can see the faded lettering of “Straiton & Storm’s” below me. I had to guess at some of the letters. the M was completely gone as was the ampersand,

At the end of day three, most of the letters were defined as is the owl.

Once I was near the lettering, I carefully outlined the parts of the letters I could see, then I filled in the rest by hand, came down to look to see the adjustments. By this time, I was using a 1 1/2 inch brush. The paint is Dutchboy, Maximum bond. I did my best to match the colors still on the wall.

The lettering of HOTEL BERRY defined, I outlined and painted the yellow. This in case the weather would turn cold to where I could no longer paint. I do not think the mural will last another year. It was already very difficult to see the old image. I also experimented with the owl itself. There was very little left to it.
Sep 1, 2020. The Blue background behind “Straiton” is one day’s work. I thought I was making great headway: about five feet high, and ten feet long, then I climbed down and saw how small it looked from the street. This when I realized the size of this mural.

By now, I had researched enough old pictures to realize that the Blue should have been a green. Evidently the old paint had faded to look blue. I am not changing it now. By the way, the size of this mural is roughly forty feet high, and twenty feet wide. A one and one half inch brush does well to get into all the cracks of the mortar.

The sun rises to shine on Sep 2, 2020’s work.

So I bought the green then found various pics with a number of different backgrounds. While the baby blue stood out, the pea green is much softer.

so, starting from the top, I paint.

finally completed except for under the porch. Oct 11, 2020
